Studio Mini Sessions | Twin Cities, Minnesota Child & Family Photographer

I know just last week I posted the sneak peeks from the first day of mini sessions; now I’m posting the second day!  These were such a big hit that I’m offering ONE MORE DAY on November 26th.  There are only 2 more spots available and this will be it for the year.  I’ll post more information at the end of this post.  But for now I wanted to share these fabulous studio sessions . . .

As you can see we did a lot of heirloom type images and less holiday this round but the option for both is there.  If would like to get into one of the spots available on November 26th e-mail me at michele@mqnphotography.com or click here: Last Minute Holiday Sessions

Mini Sessions Explained | North Oaks, Minnesota Family Photographer

Mini sessions are a scaled down version of my regular photo sessions.  They last approx. 15-20 minutes and do not include outfit changes.  Around this time a year I get a lot of requests for family mini sessions.  I do not offer these for fall foliage sessions.  Believe it or not mini sessions take me the same amount of time to process than a full session and fall is just too busy of a time to fit them in the schedule.

I do offer mini sessions year round for 1-2 children ONLY on location.  This mean no adults.  This is a kid only session and only focused on the child or siblings.

Family sessions in the STUDIO can also be booked year round.  These make great heirloom portraits.

Snow Sessions.  Enough said, right there.  It’s too cold to stay out any longer.

Themed sessions.  These are the fun sessions like Halloween, back to school or lemonade stands.  These are great 30 minute play date specials and will be announced on facebook or instagram if they are taking place.

The exception to the above rules is when I host a day of mini sessions.  These discounted mini sessions are set-up by you.  We pick a day and a place that works and you invite your friends.  There is a non-refundable fee for booking but this is the time to get discounted mini sessions for the whole family.  I do these once or twice a year with a Matilda Jane Trunk Keeper.  She invites her clients and I photograph children, seniors, families and we do what we can in 20 minutes.  If you have a few friends that would be interested in something like this let me know and we can set up a day.

If you’d like to be notified when sign ups begin for any upcoming mini session event, please let me know and I will add you to my waitlist.

And just added is this year’s last minute holiday sessions!  Sessions will be held in the studio on November 5th & 12th 2017.   Backdrops will include fall and Christmas styled as well as heirloom (think grey and white walls only)  These are being scheduled now and times are still available.  If you are interested e-mail michele@mqnphotography.com

Tips for Beautiful Fall or Winter Photos | North Oaks, Minnesota Family Photographer

There is a special kind of magic that comes with outdoor, winter photo sessions. The snow lightly falling and icicles hanging from the branches create a lovely backdrop for any photo session. Here are some tips to make your winter or fall photo sessions go smoothly.

  1. Dress warmly. You will be surprised at how often this is overlooked. Since you’ll be standing outside for a long period of time, short sleeves, thin fabrics, and open toe shoes will not be comfortable for very long. Shivering makes it hard to look happy and pose properly.
  2. Wear sunscreen. Protecting your skin should be a priority throughout the year, not just in summer. Use a good moisturizer to protect your skin from chilly winds.
  3. Watch the weather. Warmer days may seem more pleasant but melting snow can change the entire look of your backdrop. If you are looking for light snow flurries, try and keep an eye on the weather forecast to make sure that you don’t end up with melting or heavy snow.
  4. Be flexible. If the weather isn’t exactly what you had hoped for, see if you can still make the photo session work. If you are however scheduling this session in advance, you may just have to work with the weather on that particular day.
  5. Incorporate color. Even though fall and winter have some amazing colors to work with, why not wear a splash of color to really stand out in your photos? For example, vibrant shades of blues and greens look amazing amongst crunchy brown leaves.
  6. Plan your day. Taking your photos just after the sun rises or just before it sets will provide you with amazing lighting so try and plan your session around those times.

Take some hot tea or coffee along to make your photo session even more enjoyable and get ready for some beautiful results.

Should You Have a Themed Photo Session | North Oaks, Minnesota Child & Family Photographer

You have probably seen many photos that were taken at a themed photo session. Your friends’ kids got their latest pictures taken in matching Western outfits. Your aunt had a movie theme for her wedding pictures. There are countless theme ideas you can use to make your photos interesting, unique, and a reflection of your personality.

If you are considering a themed photo session, answer the following questions discover your ideal theme:

Is this photo session indoors or outdoors? If it’s outdoors you’ll probably want to consider a theme that suits the current weather.

What season is it? If you are looking to use a specific backdrop or seasonal prop, use Mother Nature’s current display as your theme.

Do you love a specific historical era, such as the 50’s? Or a particular TV series like Star Trek? There are so many eras and movies that you can draw inspiration from. Make a list of shows, movies & eras that you and your family love.

Do you have specific hobbies? Perhaps you are an animal lover, a sports fan or have a passion for fashion. Make a list of your interests and your theme might just jump out at you.

Is this a major life event? Use your pregnancy announcement or your wedding as the perfect excuse for a fun photo session.  Is your baby turning one?  Use a setting and props that speak to both you and family’s interests. There is also tons of inspiration on websites such as Pinterest that you can turn to for ideas

Whatever theme you decide to choose, make sure that it speaks to your personalities so that you genuinely enjoy the process. Themed photo sessions are also usually a great way to encourage children to be involved and to get them excited.

The mQn Photography Studio Space | North East Minneapolis Studio Photographer

I am so excited to announce my leap into renting a shared studio space in Northeast Minneapolis.  It’s such a beautiful space.

This month I’m participating in a blog circle with a few photographer friends from all over the globe!  At the end of this post, be sure to click my friend Hali’s link to follow the circle around.  Hali is from Rochester, NY.   You’ll get a glimpse of her getting in the frame on her blog.  It’s so important for us photographers to get in the frame too!  Which is way you’ll see me below too in my new studio space . . .

If you are on Instagram then you may have already heard but I wanted to officially put it on the blog.   It’s the perfect space for families, newborns, babies or older children.  It’s just the perfect amount of vintage/rustic I love and also a great space for cake smashes and all kinds of other ideas I have brewing in my mind.

And if the actual studio space wasn’t enough there are lots of common areas to access too which is great for older kids and seniors!

I’m really hoping to be able to utilize the space most of winter when it’s just too cold to go outside and all other times in the year when a client’s home just isn’t what they want.  I will still be offering my services for outdoor/indoor on location sessions as well as in-home lifestyle and fresh 48 and NICU sessions at the hospitals. But for all the other times you can come see me here.
