6 Questions You Should Be Asking Your Photographer | North Oaks, Minnesota Photographer

How long have you been a photographer?

The longer a photographer has been in business, the more likely it is that it’s not just a hobby for them. I’ve been photographing children and their families since 2009; that’s going on 8 years!

This image was captured at one of my first sessions ever in July 2009

Which types of photography do you specialize in?

It’s uncommon for a photographer to specialize in several different types of photography as they often only specialize in one or sometimes two genres. For example, I specialize in children and families and while I do dabble in newborns and seniors I might not be the best candidate to shoot weddings but I do second shoot weddings so I do have a wonderful photographer who I will refer you to.

Do you have many repeat clients?

This is a great litmus test of not only the quality of a photographer’s work but of their customer service too. I pride myself on having so many repeat clients, I also believe many of my clients have become my friends over the years and I feel blessed because of it.

I have been photographing this beautiful family since I moved to Minnesota in 2013. I have actually photographed them 10 times in the last 4 years!

What is your policy on rescheduling a session?

An experienced photographer will definitely have a policy in place when it comes to a customer cancelling or rescheduling a photography session. A photographer with policies indicates that they have experience with different types of customers and situations and have created policies accordingly. I have many policies that I have to be strict on to keep it fair but I am very flexible when it comes to rescheduling or cancelling a session.  I certainly don’t want to go through a session if it’s not the right time for you.

Have you had any experience with (name your specific concern)?

If you have any specific concerns regarding your photo session such as the photographer’s ability to work with a special needs child for example, find out if they have ever handled that type of situation before. Do not dismiss a photographer and their abilities based on their answers to your concerns. If given adequate notice, an experienced photographer should be able to deal with any situation you present them. This is the hallmark of a true pro.

I’m honored to a participating photographer for The Tiny Footprints Project. I photograph babies and their families living in the NICU free of charge. Many times these rooms are dark and we are not allowed to pose or use flash but the images always turn out beautiful. Sometimes these are the only professional images families get of their newborns.

Silent Question:

Use your gut to judge their personality and rapport. A photographer’s main job is to capture emotions and moments. If your photographer doesn’t mesh well with you on the phone or in person, chances are you and your family will not mesh well with them at your session and this will show in your photos.

At Hill Farm with the Kavan Family Sneak Peeks | North Oaks Child & Family Photographer

Hill Farm is one of my favorite North Oaks treasures.  I take my kids there a lot to photograph and I love when other North Oaks families choose this location.  It’s such a fun place in every season.  This summer and just last week I was there with this lovely family.  I can’t believe how much this little girl has grown since the last time I took her pictures (at another “secret” location in North Oaks) I love watching families grow.  Anyway here are some sneak peeks and stay tuned once I finish us their gallery I will be posting some favorites over on Facebook.  Enjoy!

The Extending Roach Family | North Oaks Family Photographer

It’s so fun when I do an extended family session and the family in fact has “extended”  by adding new faces.  This family added another beauty to their family.  Big ol blue eyes.  And the other kiddos growing so fast too!  Time just gets away from me.  Anyway I’m just posting some sneak peeks here of this extended family session and in another week or so I’ll post more favorites on Facebook.  In the meantime enjoy your family!

Why Your Photographer Loves What They Do | North Oaks, Minnesota Photographer

If you have ever wondered what spurs on a photographer’s passion, you are about to find out. Below are just some of the many reasons your photographer wouldn’t change their job for anything in the world.

  1. Photography changes how you see things. You notice colors, textures, flowers, trees, people, shapes and light in a way most people never see them.
  2. You pay more attention to the beauty around you. Even the most mundane object can become beautiful when you photograph it in a creative way. Many photographers love their job because they develop a fascination with the world around them by viewing it through new eyes
  3. It’s an amazing creative outlet. You get the chance to put a little bit of who you are into each photo that you take. Anyone can click a camera’s buttons but not everyone can truly make a photo come to life
  4. It’s a challenge. Creating amazing photos that capture the magic of everyday life doesn’t come without hard work, dedication and imagination. There is always something new to explore and a new way to take the same photos. It’s a job that never gets boring
  5. You get to meet new people all the time. A photographer works with people from all walks of life. Getting to know someone new is a part of the process of bringing someone’s personality through in a photo. It also makes the job a lot more fun!
  6. The flexibility is great. Being a full time photographer means you get to work your own hours. This doesn’t mean it’s a laid back profession though. A photographer is always aiming to perfect their craft, taking on new challenges and helping their clients achieve the perfect pictures.

When you decide to pay for a professional photo session, know that you are hiring an individual who is passionate about what they do and is willing to go the extra mile to help you create beautiful photos that you can treasure forever.

Senior Session Sneak Peeks | North Oaks, Minnesota Senior Photographer

It amazes me all the time how fast time goes by.  Talking with this senior during his session just reminded me how soon my own son will be doing senior pics (I wonder if he’ll let me take them?)  I mean we still have 7 years but it’s going to be here before I know it!  Ok so I’m just going to enjoy the next few years but this guy is off to big things after high school.  Enjoy your last year ruling the school.
