Tips for Gorgeous Outdoor Photos | North Oaks, Minnesota Family Photographer

Being outdoors in the summer sun is a great setting for some fun photos of you and your loved ones. In order to get the best results from your session, there are a few things to consider before you step in front of your photographer’s lens.

1. Wear sunscreen. If you are going to be out in the sun for a long period of time, especially with children, sunscreen is a must. It can however also make your skin look quite shiny. If possible apply makeup that has built-in sunscreen otherwise apply some powered concealer to spots that look especially oil.

2. Bring along some tissues & concealer powder. Unless it’s a cool day, you’re probably going to sweat. Bring along some tissues for dabbing off the sweat and your concealer powder for touch ups.

3. There might be bugs. Photos in the woods can be romantic and beautiful but depending on the time of day and the area you’re in, it could mean swatting away flies and mosquitoes. A little bug repellent can make your photo session a lot more pleasant

4. Stay hydrated. Posing for pictures may not seem like hard work but in the hot sun, you don’t have to move around much to be affected by the heat. Make sure you bring lots of water and other hydrating beverages, and drink up often.

5. Apply makeup sparingly. You want that fresh, sun kissed look in your photos so don’t overdo your makeup application.

6. What you wear matters. Choose clothing that is comfortable and fits your body shape. Feel free to incorporate accessories such as a hat but don’t let it overwhelm the photo.

7. Choose your time of day. Since midday can be scorching, plan your shoot early in the morning or just before the sun sets to avoid looking hot and flustered in your photos.

Spring Break on Film | Palm Beach, Florida Vacation Photographer

That’s right, on FILM!  When we went on spring break this year I brought along my film camera.  It’s a Canon EOS 3 which means I can use all my current fancy lenses on this camera body.  I love this 35mm camera.  I bought it used on EBAY and it has it’s faults but I’m learning its quirks and for $75 I can’t complain.   This year I’ve really been focusing on film again and I have to say it’s really renewed my love for photography.  I think I actually love my vacation photos from my film camera better than my digital camera who would have known?  Ok I’ll break these out by film stocks because I shot 6 rolls of film all different stocks.

Fuji 400H

Agfa Vista 200

Ektar 100

Lomography 400

Portra 400

And for some funky fun, I cross processed Provia 100.  On a couple I liked what happened but on most I didn’t (learned lesson) but I changed a couple to make them more tolerable.  Still some funky goodness on film.

So which film stock do you prefer?

The Traveling Dress | North Oaks, Minnesota Fine Art Photographer

I was lucky enough to participate in a wonderful project that we called The Traveling Dress.  A few very talented ladies and I sent each other the same dress and photographed it.  Each of us had the dress for one week.  We didn’t tell each other what we were doing with it and it was a complete surprise until we published our images.  You can see the published post here at The Photo Sanctuary.  But I wanted to share all of my images from this session as well.

Matilda Jane Holiday Mini Sneak Peeks | Lindstrom, Minnesota Child & Family Photographer

We had another fabulous Matilda Jane Mini session day.  We focused on the holidays this time around and I got to see some familiar kids and met some new faces as well.  My daughter did a great job helping me out this time too so she was able to join the girls in some of their group shots which she enjoyed doing.  So without further ado here are the sneak peeks from our day.  I can’t believe how much sun we got.  We totally thought it would be cloudy!  2016-11-18_0001

Can you believe all these sneak peeks?  Ok I have lots of work to do to try and get everyone their images before Thanksgiving!  Here’s hoping!

Late Fall Session with the Betty’s Sneak Peek | North Oaks, Minnesota Family and Child Photographer

I had such a fun session with the Betty’s; we played games, we explored and I’m pretty sure the boys didn’t want it to end (which was either because I’m so awesome or they just loved our location, lol) In any event we all had fun!  And these brothers!  They are so close and you can tell they are just going to be best friends when they grow up and throughout their childhood.  Late fall sessions can be tough but you can hardly tell that all the leaves have fallen and autumn is about over and we will be quickly headed towards winter.  Sharing sneak peeks here and favorites will be posted on Facebook once I wrap up the session.  Enjoy!
