Baby’s First Christmas in the Studio | Twin Cities, Minnesota Family Photographer

We all know how much I LOVE photographing babies, and how much I love photographing NICU babies especially.  But when my NICU babies get to come home before Christmas AND I get to photograph them again, well that’s just down right the best Christmas present ever!  I saw this little guy back in October and I just cannot believe how much he’s grown.  He’s weighing in at 10lbs now!  And the most chill baby, I mean his parents are pretty cool so I’m sure it’s in his DNA.  So anyway sharing some sneak peeks here and I’ll be sure to post favorites on Facebook and there are sure to be a lot!  Stay tuned . . .

and when I last saw them in the hospital . . .

All Pink in the NICU | University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital NICU Photographer

I had the pleasure to meet this little beauty in the NICU.  She was born with a birth defect called Gastroschisis. The CDC describes “Gastroschisis as a birth defect of the abdominal (belly) wall. The baby’s intestines are found outside of the baby’s body, exiting through a hole beside the belly button. The hole can be small or large and sometimes other organs, such as the stomach and liver, can also be found outside of the baby’s body.”  Her surgery was already completed when I visited and I believe she was doing quite well.

Faith and Hope in the NICU | Minnesota NICU Photographer

This little guy was born early on the evening of September 5th. His mother was diagnosed with severe preeclampsia and at 28 weeks and 4 days needed to deliver due to the deterioration in her own health. Pregnant with twins; unfortunately his sister did not make it and had passed away in the womb about a month prior. Born at 1 lb 15 oz this cutie continues to be in the NICU. He has underwent one surgical procedure on his little stomach and the family is unsure of what else will be in store for their little guy.  I was so honored to give this family some photographs that can show their love for their beautiful little boy.  This family is a wonderful example of why I love doing what I do.  They have faith and a belief that he will grow and thrive into a healthy little boy.   There are not always happy endings in the NICU but there is so much hope that lives there and it warms my heart every time I go and photograph a new little fighter.  I don’t think I’ll ever stop doing this.

Saying Hi in the NICU | Minnesota NICU Photographer

This little guy unexpectedly came into the world on September 15  weighing 4lbs 4oz. He is currently doing well in the NICU and when I visited he was weighing about 6lbs!  I’m so blessed to meet these little ones.  I’m still editing their session but when I get to share images I cannot wait . . .

Newborn Photography; The Process and How We Work with You and Your Baby | North Oaks, Minnesota Newborn Photographer

Working with families begins even before your little one arrives. Although babies are unpredictable and not always born on the exact due date as planned, we will still have a general idea so that we can start preparing on our end. We also understand that you may want a few days to rest, so take your time. It is recommended to have the shoot within the first couple of weeks of your baby’s birth, so we can capture those “newborn” faces while they are still so fragile, innocent and beautiful. Babies also sleep more often during those first couple of weeks.

If you are too uncomfortable to attend the shoot, due to having a C-section or difficult recovery, you may want to send the baby to our studio with Daddy. It will give him a good opportunity to bond with baby as well. However, if you would like family photos rather than just individual images of the infant, this is something we can discuss.

Once your session is scheduled, we can talk about your vision for the images. You can incorporate your own ideas. Some parents like to bring props, such as little hats, scarves, mittens or special booties and blankets. We also keep props on hand for this occasion. All items are sanitized in between newborn sessions, so we do keep your baby’s safety and comfort in mind.

Here are a few general tips on shooting your newborn’s photos:

  • Please wait to feed your baby until upon arrival, so that he/she might be more likely to fall asleep after nursing. We have a comfortable place for you to do this.
  • Bring a pacifier or nubby for your little one to suck on.
  • Many of the images we take are “au natural” but we do not want your baby to be cold, so you can bring a favorite soft blanket.
  • If you have any favorite outfits, such as an NFL team jersey, christening gown, or ballerina tutu, etc., please bring these special items with you.
  • For parents, just dress comfortably. You do not have to dress up. You can wear a blouse or a nice top if you wish to have any pictures with the baby. We can shoot the images from the waist up.

Be prepared to sign a model release, as I do often use newborn images within my portfolio and will not do so without parental consent. Most parents are more than okay with this, but if for any reason you do not want me to showcase your infant in my collection, please address any concerns you might have in advance.
